Georgia O’Keeffe: A Magical Life, from Abiquiú to/the Ghost Ranch
Photography by
Christopher Springmann
Georgia O’Keeffe’s imagination and lifestyle have intrigued the world throughout her life, fascinating collectors and critics, artists and museums. But was she reclusive and reserved? No, just the opposite, says photographer Christopher Springmann, who has produced, for the first time, a wondrous collection of stunning portrait prints.
These photographs, many never seen before, were taken by Springmann at O’Keeffe’s Abiquiú home and her Ghost Ranch residence & studio in 1974 when she was 86. They provide intimate insights into her gentle style: a powerful and prolific artist, content and secure in the environment she chose and created.

About the Photographer
“I photographed Georgia O’Keeffe in 1974 when she was 86. She graciously showed me her Abiquiú front room first and said, ‘This is my favorite place. I love the light, color, warmth, even the stones, especially under Sandy’s (Alexander Calder) beautiful mobile.’ ”
As we packed to move to the Ghost Ranch, I said, with a touch of humor, ‘You’re a joy to photograph … you’ve done this before, I can tell.’ She looked at me, laughed and leaned in, smiling broadly, nodding: ‘Yes, dear Christopher, many times!’” (Since 1917!)
The image has been featured in the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum book, “Georgia O’Keeffe and Her Houses,” while the sessions were documented in the Brooklyn Museum book, “Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern.”
“Christopher Springmann’s portraits of Georgia O’Keeffe exhibit an unusually tactful and persuasive approach, while maintaining a sense of humor, much like O’Keeffe herself. Springmann shows a unique ability to capture her humanity – in the perfect light.“
